The skilled independent visa (subclass 189) is for invited workers and New Zealand citizens with the skills Australian businesses need. Holders of this visa can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Points tested stream

To apply for the skilled independent visa (ubclass 189) you must be under the age of 45 and you must be invited to apply. Successful applicants do not require a sponsor or a nominator.

New Zealand stream

The skilled independent visa (subclass 189) lets eligible New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

To be considered for this visa you must hold a New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa and have lived in Australia for at least the last 5 years on, or before, 19 February 2016.


From AUD$4,045 for the main applicant. This fee is payable in two instalments
